UCLG ASPAC through the Climate Resilient and Inclusive Cities or CRIC Project will conduct a policy dialogue and mayors’ commitment signing on 31 May 2021 in order to facilitate dialogue between local and national government to reiterate their commitment to climate-resilient and inclusive development. CRIC will bring four mayors from 10 chose pilot cities of the project (Ternate, Bandar Lampung, Mataram, and Samarinda) and policymakers from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry on this hybrid event.
This event conducted to give the urgency to climate action, particularly at the city level, as climate change is one of the mandates in regional development priorities in line with economic and human development, as well as being one of the pillars SDGs. Climate change causes various harmful effects not only in economic sector but also human health and prosperity. According to IPCC, global warming will potentially reach 1.5 degree Celsius between 2030 and 2052. As IPCC stated on their report, future climate-related risk depends on the rate, peak and duration of warming. The effects will be larger and some impact may be irreversible if global warming transcend 1.5 degree Celsius before 2100, especially if the peak temperature is about 2 degrees Celsius.
On that reason, there is a need to ensure that climate resilience issues are integrated into city planning. Especially at a time when at a national level, Indonesia is racing with time to meet its NDCs target to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by 29% independently and 41% with international assistance by 2030, which is also part of the Race to Zero – Race to Resilience campaign to be carbon-neutral by the same year. Long-term development strategies to climate resilient is crucial and local government plays an important role to the action with policy as the foundation. Indonesian cities must take part in transforming political commitment into concrete climate actions.
The event will start at 10.00 WIB or 10:00 AM Jakarta time, with opening remarks from the Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, the First Counsellor for Environment, Climate and Digital European Union Delegation to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, and MoEF’s Director of Climate Change Adaptation, continued with the commitment signing and urban analysis reports handover, and lastly there will be a policy dialogue.
