An amazing dish that is worth trying! Check out our experience at the 'Daehan Gopchang' restaurant!
If you are living or have been in Korea, you probably already know about a special dish of Korean, Gopchang (곱창) and Makchang (막창), which is usually beef (sometimes pork) intestines. Gopchang is usually grilled Korean barbecue-style over hot coals, though sometimes it comes stir-fried with an assortment of vegetables in a spicy sauce. When raw, gopchang or makchang resembles a pinkish squiggle of gross, but it’s actually quite flavorful and texturally interesting when grilled and sliced into more manageable, bite-sized pieces.
Today, we tried a popular grilled intestines restaurant! This restaurant's name is "Daehan Gopchang" (대한곱창).
This restaurant was once just a small catering business. But in 2018, on the show "I Live Alone" broadcast by MBC, K-Pop group MamaMoo's Hwasa caused a "hit" with beef intestines when she went to "Daehan Gopchang" restaurant.
The restaurant then quickly became extremely popular, with long lines of people waiting to be served. “I waited like two hours to get into the restaurant,” a Twitter user said, “Everyone in the restaurant was talking about Hwasa from last night’s show. The restaurant constantly played Mamamoo’s song in the store as well.” And quickly, they expanded their chain widely throughout Seoul as well as Korea.
Mamamoo's Hwasa created a phenomenon and trending phrases all over social media at the time, such as "Hwasa Gopchang" or "Hwasa Gopchang." She has made a struggling business bounce back strongly and even become a "craze." MamaMoo later became the brand's ambassador for this restaurant, further promoting the restaurant's menu.
Today, we tried beef makchang and gopchang, and they are really delicious. Personally, I prefer makchang. The meat is very fatty and fragrant. The eatery is also very clean, with a cozy feeling. The space is also very airy, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Our seats are next to the glass window, so it feels very comfortable and chills. The restaurant staff is also very enthusiastic about supporting us while eating.
Each person was prepared for a tray of these sauces, along with an illustrated guide to using the sauces most delicious.
The staff will make an exciting "performance" with the dish, where they make the gopchang and makchang flare-up in the fire making the dish look beautiful. The staff is very professional, so there is no need to worry about the danger.
A set of dishes includes the main order, beef hearts, vegetables, a pot of tofu soup, kimchi, and various dipping spices.
Normally, gopchang is a dish to eat while drinking soju. This seems to be an indispensable combo of the Koreans.
The average price per person in 'Daehan Gopchang' will be around 16,000 won- 20,000 won, which may seem more expensive than normal barbecue, but it certainly won't let you down!
