The nation is set to launch its first food delivery service using drones.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Aug. 20 said that in collaboration with the drone company P-Square and the global chain Domino's Pizza, it will launch the next day a pizza delivery service using drones in Sejong.
Sejong is where government offices crucial for national administration such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism were moved. The city was also named a drone demonstration city and a special free zone this year.
The drone delivery of Domino's pizzas will have two routes: the first from the Domino's branch in the city's Boram-dong neighborhood to the Maehwa concert venue (2.6 km) or Water Flower Island (2.2 km) at Sejong Lake Park. Two drones will be used in the delivery, which will take six to nine minutes.
Drone delivery will run from Aug. 21 to Oct. 31 on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a frequency of two or three deliveries per hour.
The government will provide guides on site and issue real-time notices online to promote the nation's launch of commercial drone delivery so that visitors at the park can use the service through an app.
Customers can track the location of a drone around the park via their cell phones through the official delivery app (Domino's). A password given after an order is made is needed to receive the delivery to prevent theft or loss.
The Land Ministry noted the vast improvement of locational precision through advanced, state-of-the-art satellite navigation. For example, a sensor detects any anomaly in the air and self-driving drone technology allows flying without a controller.
