The Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS), an affiliate of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on Aug. 19 said it will host events to wish for the safety and good performance of athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Paralympics.

The events are designed to raise awareness of taekwondo, the first official event adopted by the Paralympics, and send cultural content that encourage and support the athletes through Korean Cultural Centers (KCC) around the world.

The KCC in Russia has cooperated with the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and Kukkiwon, the headquarters of World Taekwondo, to post on social media videos promoting the martial art and its poomsae (forms).

The KCC in Paris from Aug. 23-27 will hold through social media a taekwondo quiz event. The one in Los Angeles will hold taekwondo demonstrations and performances on Sept. 4 to mark California's designation of Taekwondo Day on the same day.

Encouragement and support for Paralympians will be conveyed through K-pop in the sign language of each host country's tongue. The KCC in Indonesia and a sign language organization there will express K-pop lyrics through Indonesian sign language and hold a "campaign of encouragement via sign language" for the athletes during the Paralympics.

The KCC in Poland on Aug. 19 will post on its social media news slides teaching sign language seen in K-pop music videos.

Other performances will seek to unite the disabled and non-disabled. The KCC in the United Arab Emirates on Aug. 24 will host the online concert "Ttamtti: Korean Traditional Music Concert Connecting in Friendship" featuring samulnori (traditional percussion music).

The KCC in Japan also held "Harmony of Peace Ⅰand Ⅱ," a performance by Korean and Japanese artists, following a recital last month directed and played by Korean Japanese pianist Yang Bang-ean.

On Aug. 17, the center showed a joint performance by Korean cellist Park Hyun-ah and the visually impaired Japanese pianist Miyoshi Akiko, as well as a singing concert utilizing Japanese sign language.

KOCIS Director Park Jung-Youl said, "Through the Paralympics, we prepared Korean cultural content that enable disabled and non-disabled to understand each other and harmoniously coexist," adding, "I hope that many people both enjoy and are touched by this."

Information on KCC events related to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics is available on the KOCIS website (https://www.kocis.go.kr/koccIntro.do) and those of the respective KCCs.
