The IEF International e-sports Festival, which marks its 17th competition this year, has been alternately held in Korea and China since 2005 to expand cultural exchanges between Korean and Chinese youth.

Amateur athletes from more than 100 universities from 15 countries, including South Korea and China, will participate in the competition to compete in three categories: League of Legends, Hearthstone, and Battleground.

This year, athletes from each country will participate in the competition online at local stadiums due to COVID-19. The nine Korean teams will participate in the competition at Daejeon e-sports Stadium.

The competition is available on IEF's official YouTube and Twitter channels.

Daejeon e-sports Stadium, where the Korean team will play, is a circular stadium that can accommodate up to 500 people, and visitors can feel the players' breathing together and immerse themselves through a large screen on four sides.

Since its opening in September, it has held "Hanbat Daejeon," "Daejeon E-Sports Championship," and "Daejeon University Student E-Sports Competition," drawing much attention from Daejeon citizens and e-sports people across the country.

It operates an e-sports staff and broadcasting manpower academy to foster local e-sports industry manpower and create jobs. Various exhibitions and events will also be held and used in various ways.

E-sports has become an official event at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. Its interest and perception are growing positively.

Based on the advantage of having a professional stadium in the region, Daejeon City plans to actively build the role of a regional base and revitalize the local ecosystem of the e-sports industry.

Son Cheol-woong, director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Daejeon City, said, "Daejeon City is planning to host various international and domestic major competitions starting with this IEF competition. Daejeon will make the e-sports stadium a complex cultural and sports space with citizens by operating regional competitions and holding various events."
