Korea won two gold, five silver and two bronze medals at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics that ended on Feb. 20.

The country finished 14th in the gold medal count.

Thus the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee achieved its goal announced before the competition's opening ceremony of one or two golds and a top 15 finish.

Speedskaters Hwang Dae-heon (Gangwon Provincial Office) and Choi Min-jeong (Seongnam City Hall) each won a gold medal. The country clinched two golds and three silvers in short track speedskating.

The rankings were based on the number of golds. Norway placed first with 16 gold, eight silver and 13 bronze medals. Germany was second with 12 gold, 10 silver and five bronze, China third with nine gold, four silver and two bronze, and the U.S. fourth with eight gold, 10 silver and seven bronze.

The next Winter Olympics are slated for 2026 in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Italy will thus host its third Winter Olympics, having done so earlier in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo and 2006 in Turin.

President Moon Jae-in on the same day sent a congratulatory telegram saying that regardless of winning a medal or its color, Korea's performance was "self-satisfying." Adding that he was proud of the country's athletes, who confidently conducted interviews, the chief executive said "everyone did their best each and every moment and were all winners."
