The Tongyeong International Music Festival, a leading classical music event in Asia, will open on March 25 and run through April 3 at Tongyeong Concert Hall in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province.

Marking its 20th anniversary, the festival will feature 23 colorful performances under the theme "Vision in Diversity."

The concert hall is on a hill with a view of the blue ocean. With 1,300 seats, 300-seat black box and outdoor stage, this venue tailor made for classical music concerts offers the essence of such music to audiences.

The opening performance on March 25 will see the Asia premiere of the orchestral work "Play: Level 1" by Andrew Norman, an American composer of contemporary classical music. Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska will lead the Tongyeong Festival Orchestra and perform together with Norwegian cellist Truls Mork.

At the closing ceremony on April 3, the orchestra under the direction of German conductor Markus Stenz will perform Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 7 and the Asia premiere of Norman's 2008 work "Unstuck." Hungarian pianist Dezso Ranki is also set to perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the orchestra.

Russian soprano star Julia Lezhneva on March 30 will perform Baroque arias by Vivaldi and Handel. The performance on April 1 will feature Haydn's Nelson Mass performed by the orchestra under Stenz, bassist Youn Kwang-chul and soprano Park Hye-sang.

Every performance will be aired in real time on the Tongyeong International Music Foundation's official YouTube channel. More information is available on the festival's official website (https://www.timf.org/en/).

Held in honor of Tongyeong-born composer Yun Isang (1917-95) and his music, the festival is Asia's most prestigious for contemporary classical music and nicknamed "Korea's Salzburg Festival." Mainly active in Germany, the globally renowned Yun combined Eastern and Western musical techniques and ideas. He died in 1995 in Berlin and his remains were later moved in 2018 to Tongyeong.
