The meeting was attended by 20 members of the sports department of the Korea Sports Journalists Federation, including Yoon-seok Kim, secretary-general of the committee. The Korea Sports Journalists Federation has 32 media outlets affiliated with the Korea Sports Association.
The committee explained the background, progress, and future schedule of the 2027 World University Games Summer (Universiade) joint bid in Chungcheong Province and held a question-and-answer session.
The committee, which achieved the feat of being selected as a candidate city by the Federation of International Sports Universiade (FISU) in January of this year, is conducting a '1 million signature campaign' that contains the enthusiasm for attracting the entire nation to successfully host the competition and establish itself as a national event.
So far, more than 200,000 citizens have participated in the signature campaign, realizing the passionate desire of the Chungcheong region to host the competition.
The 2027 World University Games Summer in Chungcheong Province is the most influential event to promote the power of Chungcheong to the whole world. The four cities and provinces in the Chungcheong region, including Daejeon Metropolitan City, Sejong Special Self-Governing City, Chungcheongbuk-do, and Chungcheongnam-do, enhance the global brand value of mega-cities and improve the local economy. It aims to take a leap forward, revitalize university sports, improve access to sports, and integrate with the local community.
The Republic of Korea has hosted a total of three World University Games, including the 2003 Daegu Universiade, the 2015 Gwangju Universiade, and the 1997 Muju/Jeonju Winter Universiade.
Secretary-General Kim Yun-Seok, who hosted the event, said, “As there has been no case of an international competition held in the Chungcheong region so far, the challenge of this committee is a meaningful activity in itself. It will serve as an opportunity to develop sports in cities and provinces and expand sports infrastructure,” he said, requesting active support.
Meanwhile, the 2027 Summer Universiade, under the new name of World University Games (WUG), will be held around August 2027, with over 15,000 participants from 150 countries participating in the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and 18 sports.
The economic ripple effect of the Chungcheong region's competition is expected to reach KRW 2.72 trillion, an employment-inducing effect for 14,99 people and an employment-inducing effect for 7,244 people. It is also expected to play a significant role in attracting 2 million foreign visitors.
