The Madanggeuk Company Wukumchi (CEO Lee Joo-haeng) will perform 'Hashi Haji', a performance that inherits the spirit of the national independence movement by Danjae Shin Chaeho at 8 p.m. on June 9th (Thursday) to 11th (Saturday) at the outdoor special stage of Daejeon Modern and Contemporary History Exhibition Hall (former Chungnam Provincial Office).
'Hashi Haji' is based on the life story of Danjae Shin Chaeho, a historical figure in Daejeon. At the time of the premiere, the stage of the Chungnam Provincial Government Building, a historical building that retains the pain of the Japanese colonial era, was praised by the audience for raising the spirit of the independence movement to a stronger emotion. In addition, the possibility of a new cultural space where citizens can enjoy culture and arts was confirmed.
A total of 60 people, including the production crew, participate in this performance, and dancers from Daejeon's representative contemporary dance team, Meta Dance Project (based in Daejeon), who won the Grand Prize at the 29th National Dance Festival in 2020, appear in large numbers to further enhance their artistry.
Sung Jang-soon, director of the Madanggeuk theater company Wukumchi, has been waiting for the corona situation to ease in order to accommodate a large number of audiences as it was a hard-prepared performance. He said that he planned to promote the performances not only outdoor but also as permanent performances at Wukumchi Gwanyong Theater in Byeolbyeol Madang so that "Hashi Haji", a spiritual performance of the Shin Chaeho national independence movement, can be seen and enjoyed by all Daejeon citizens.
The Madanggeuk company Wukumchi is a representative theater company in Korea that inherits the traditional performances and recreates it according to the times. They toured the country 3,500 times, with 40 creative works such as "Long live Auntie" (아줌마만세), "Indigo Twilight" (쪽빛황혼), and "Pig Party" (돼지잔치). They have also won the National Theater of Korea Best Picture (5th and 7th), the 3rd National Art Award, the 33rd Baeksang Arts Awards Special Award in Theater Division, the 2nd Korean Traditional Performance Festival Grand Prize, the 2nd Korean Traditional Music Awards Grand Prize, and the 2018 Best Art Management Award.
