In the Daejeon mayoral election, which was classified as a tight area in the June 1 local elections, Lee Jang-woo, a candidate for People's Power, was elected after defeating Heo Taejung, a candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea.
According to the National Election Commission, Lee Jang-woo won with 51.19 percent (311,035 votes) of the vote and won by 14,480 votes after a close race with Heo Taejung (48.80 percent, 295,555 votes).
President-elect Lee said, "First of all, I feel very honored, and I feel a heavy responsibility. Daejeon is a city with a declining population and young people leaving for jobs, so my heart is heavy with my calling to revitalize Daejeon rather than joy."
He continued, "As promised during the election, we will create high-quality jobs in Daejeon and secure 5 million pyeong of industrial complex to transform Daejeon into a first-class economic city." We will prepare well for the implementation,” he added.
He said, "I want to remain as a mayor who works for the citizens from dawn until late at night," he said.
