Have fun in the Iksan Prison Filming Set (익산 교도소 세트장)!

Dark tourism is generally defined as tourism involving travel to places historically associated with death and tragedy. Visitors would feel fascinating or somewhat gruesome when they visit some dark tourism sites as they are mainly related to death and suffering.
Interestingly, dark tourism has been on the up in a global tourism market.

Prison Tours can also be part of dark tourism.
You may feel horrible or gruesome when you think of a prison.
However, this prison tour would rather be exciting and even entertaining.
You can experience prison life in this unique prison set.

The Iksan Prison Filming Set [익산 교도소세트장] is located in the city of Iksan, Jeollabukdo around 3 hours south of Seoul.
Iksan was once the capital of the ancient Baekje Kingdom.
Now the city has recognized one of the UNESCO World Heritage cities in Korea. You can easily encounter several World Heritage sites around the city.

The Iksan Prison Filming Set is the first, and only prison filming sets built in Korea.
They transformed an old elementary school into this unique and lifelike set. Much like a real prison, this place might make you feel as if you're in a real jail.
It was initially established to shoot the Korean movie, 'Holiday (홀리데이)' in 2005.
Since then, this place has become a famous movie shooting site in Korea.

Many directors gathered this place to shoot their movies or dramas, thus more than 300 tv dramas and movies were shot here. One of the most popular Korean dramas, 'Iris' (a Korean drama with action, suspense, espionage, gunfights, betrayal, politics, and romance between South and North Korean secret agents) also was filmed in this Prison Set.

The prison itself consists of a meeting room, an interrogation room, and a detention facility. Interestingly, you can witness several signs, including rehabilitation messages on the walls of the building.

Recently, they have introduced prisoners' and prison officers' uniform rental services, as well as programs such as visiting a small court and a convoy bus riding experience.

Surely you will recognize how precious freedom is after the visit, although it is just a fake experience.

Visitor Info.
It's free to enter this Prison Set. This place is open year-round except for Mondays or a day of shooting. Opening hours are from 10 am to 5 pm.
