An American magazine has ranked Korea the world's sixth most powerful country.

The weekly U.S. News & World Report on Dec. 31 released its list of the world's most powerful countries last year, raising Korea's rank two notches to sixth.

The rankings are based on scores from six attributes in the power category: a leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances, strong military and exports.

Korea received high scores in a leader (22.5), economically influential (79.8), politically influential (48.6), strong international alliances (66.4), strong military (79.1) and exports (84) for an overall score of 64.7.

"South Korea's high-tech, service-based economy is a foreign investment success story, becoming the first recipient of OECD Development Assistance Committee funds to later become a donor of the funds," the magazine said.

"The nation has seen steady growth and poverty reduction since the 1960s and is now among the world's largest economies overall."

The U.S. was the most powerful country with a score of 100, followed by China (96.3), Russia (92.7), Germany (81.6) and the U.K. (79.5) in the top five. France trailed Korea in seventh place (63.3), followed in order by Japan (63.2), or down two places from 2021, the United Arab Emirates (53.8) and Israel (53.8) to round out the top 10.
