Karaganda Region, located in the central-southern part of Kazakhstan, shares a border with Uzbekistan and is home to a population of 800,000. The region, known as "Karaganda" in the local Kazakh language, once served as the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic from 1925 to 1929 before being succeeded by Alma-Ata (now Almaty) until 1997 when the capital was relocated to Astana.

Of particular significance within Karaganda Region is the resting place of General Hong Beom-do, which serves as a memorial to his contributions as an independence activist. Additionally, the area surrounding his former residence has been developed into "Hong Beom-do Street," further symbolizing the enduring connection between the two regions.
