On the first day of the new year, SM Entertainment heated up the world with its global free online concert "Culture Humanity" featuring performances by many of their artists, including aespa, Red Velvet, NCT Dream, NCT 127, NCT U, WayV, EXO’s Baekhyun, EXO’s Kai, SHINee’s Taemin, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, SuperM, Super Junior, TVXQ, and H.O.T.’s Kangta.
It has been launched from 1 pm on Jan 1st (Korean time), through various platforms including Naver V LIVE, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok. It recorded an impressive total of approximately 35.83 million streams from 186 different countries—setting a new record for the highest number of viewers ever achieved by a Korean online concert.
Explaining why they had chosen to make the concert available for free, SM Entertainment co-CEOs Lee Sung Soo and Tak Young Joon remarked, “K-pop is not just music, but also a part of people’s lives and a medium through which we communicate and share our emotions. As we say goodbye to 2020, which was a difficult year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to cheer on the K-pop fans all over the world who went through hard times [this year], so we prepared this free concert in the hopes of bringing them bright energy and hope for a better future.”
The last song "Hope" performed by all attending artists encouraged viewers that although we are now physically apart, we can overcome any difficulty if we keep the distance between our hearts close and encourage each other "Be kind, Be humble and Be the love".
