MUAN AWARDS BMGF FOR URBAN SANITATION IN NEPAL

2021-03-31     By UCLG ASPAC

Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN) has awarded a Letter of Appreciation to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), granted by the Nepal Prime Minister Rt. Honorable K.P. Sharma Oli in marking its 28th Establishment Day Celebrations on 24 March 2021. This award is a recognition to BMGF’s support for MuAN in “Advocating To Strengthen Urban Sanitation Sector in Nepal” under the UCLG ASPAC programme of Municipalities Network Policy on Sanitation in South Asia (MuNASS).

UCLG ASPAC, with financial support from BMGF, is implementing the MuNASS partnering with the Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) and MuAN. The objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of the municipalities in designing and implementing robust and effective policies and in developing sustainable financing strategies on sanitation, particularly on Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) and Non-Sewered Sanitation (NSS). The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals target 6.2 attainments on Clean Water and Sanitation.

“I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the entire BMGF Team and thank them for assisting us in bringing about a lot of positive impacts. At this moment, I would also like to remember all partners (both government and non-government in nature) who have made the journey in Nepal very fruitful so far. May we be able to achieve much higher in the future!” says Dr Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, Secretary-General of UCLG ASPAC.

Due to the absence of BMGF representatives in Nepal, UCLG ASPAC’s Communications, Outreach and Knowledge Management Officer based in Nepal, Satish Jung Shahi, at MuAN’s request, received the award on behalf of BMGF.

In the same event, MuAN also awarded two other organizations, GIZ and The Asia Foundation (TAF), for their influential role to support Nepal’s local governments, particularly for their recognition to their assistance for MuAN in the state restructuring and federalism in Nepal.
