Both tech giants on May 6 announced that they received the Sustained Excellence Award, the top honor of this year's Energy Star Partner of the Year Awards given by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy.

The Energy Star awards are given based on the U.S. government's evaluation of energy reduction and Energy Star-certified activities of about 20,000 corporations and organizations.

Samsung gained recognition for boosting energy efficiency in its products and workplaces to earn its ninth Sustained Excellence Award for Product Brand Owner. The company also won the Partner of the Year Award for Energy Management.

Last year, Samsung acquired Energy Star certificates for 381 highly energy-efficient products. Fifty of those items acquired the top grade given to those with the highest efficiency in energy reduction.

LG Electronics, meanwhile, saw its Energy Star-certified products sold last year achieve a combined annual reduction of CO2 emissions equivalent to those emitted from 77,681 cars for a year.

Given their lifespan, LG's Energy Star-certified washers and dishwashers sold last year saved an estimated 140 billion liters of water, or enough to fill about 57,000 Olympic-size swimming pools.

The company also received an award for state-of-the-art technology applied to products that utilize energy-reducing technology.
