New museum to mark centenary of Korean aviation

The National Aviation Museum of Korea will open on July 5 to mark the centenary of the nation's flying industry.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on July 2 said the opening ceremony on July 3 will be held under the theme "Where You Meet your Highest Dream at the Nearest Place."

Located in Seoul's Gangseo-gu District near Gimpo International Airport, the museum will display the past, present and future of the aviation industry. The first floor features the history of aviation, the second the related industry and the third flying in daily life. 

The museum has a replica of the country's first aviator, Ahn Chang-nam (1900-30), and various exhibitions. The second and third floors house five interactive educational facilities used to train pilots and air traffic controllers. Visitors can also experience paragliding through virtual reality.

The opening date of July 5 was designated to mark the centennial anniversary of the Korean Provisional Government's aviation academy in California in 1920. The museum, however, will be closed immediately after the ceremony due to the coronavirus pandemic, so no visits will be allowed for a time.
