Korean traditional paper lanterns light up a Singaporean garden

A national garden in Singapore will display traditional Korean lanterns made of Hanji (traditional paper).

The Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Tourism Organization (STO) have announced the holding of "Royal Family's Walk," a traditional showcase of Hanji lanterns displaying a royal family procession. The display will run from Sept. 18 to Oct. 4 at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The showcase features 11 lantern figures comprising the Joseon Dynasty king and queen, court ladies, eunuchs and guards strolling in front of Seoul's Gyeongbokgung Palace. It has received a positive reception at the Seoul Lantern Festival, the capital's leading festival that debuted in 2009 and attracts more than two million visitors from home and abroad every year.

An STO official said, "We hope this overseas exhibition will inform potential tourists in Singapore of Seoul and serve as an opportunity to have the Seoul Lantern Festival make a leap toward a global festival."
