Artist Kim Ayoung has won the top prize at Prix Ars Electronica, the world's top media art contest.

She is the first Korean to claim the honor since its inception in 1987.

The website of the Linz, Austria-based competition on June 12 said Kim's animated work "Delivery Dancer's Sphere" received the Golden Nica, the top prize in the category New Animation Art.

The section is one of the event's most important as it spans all sectors such as visual art, mixed reality, installation and interactivity.

In August last year, the premiere of "Delivery Dancer's Sphere" was held at Kim's solo exhibition hosted by Gallery Hyundai in Seoul. The main character is a female delivery worker locked in a labyrinth due to the navigation by the endlessly updating delivery app Delivery Dancer in a fictional Seoul.

The work features a narrative of this world in which the company's dancers are micromanaged and never-ending deliveries are sent through the Dancemaster app, the world's most dominant delivery platform that uses a master algorithm.

Gallery Hyundai quoted the judges as saying the work "combines philosophy, topological mathematics and classical physics with outstanding visual storytelling to successfully depict the multi-layered and uncontrollable world we live in."
