Incheon, Korea Becomes The Host City for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics Regular Conference in 2027

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization - 문화체육관광부 (hereinafter referred to as the Korea Tourism Organization) have achieved success in attracting the 29th International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) regular conference to Incheon in 2027, in collaboration with the Incheon Tourism Organization and the IUGG Korean National Committee.

Held every four years, the IUGG regular conference serves as a platform for earth science experts from around the world to present research findings and discuss current issues in the field. Following Japan's hosting in 2003, this event marks the second time in 24 years that the conference will be held in Asia.

The upcoming conference will take place at Incheon Songdo Convensia.

The upcoming conference, which will take place at Incheon Songdo Convensia, is expected to attract approximately 5,000 participants from 80 countries, including 1,500 domestic and 3,500 international attendees. Korea's successful bid for hosting was secured with the highest number of votes, 22 out of 37 voting member countries, during the 28th conference held in Berlin, Germany (July 11-20, 2023).

The Organization played a pivotal role in achieving this success through various tailored supports, including collaborative efforts with the Incheon Tourism Organization and the IUGG Korean National Committee. This involved visits from key officials using the Organization's 32 overseas branches, sending letters of support for the bid, and actively assisting decision-makers at international conferences.

Mr. Jung Chang-wook (정창욱), Head of the MICE Division at the Organization, expressed his excitement about the recovery of the international conference industry from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the efforts made in inviting international organization executives to Korea, participating in major overseas MICE exhibitions, and appointing prominent figures as KOREA MICE ambassadors to support diverse bid activities. Mr. Jung stated that the successful hosting of the international conference is expected to attract numerous high-value MICE industry stakeholders to visit Korea.
