The smash Netflix TV series "Squid Game" has been nominated for Best Drama Series at the Emmy Awards, dubbed the "Academy Awards of American TV."

This is the first time for a non-English drama to be nominated in the Emmy category.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences of the U.S. on July 12 announced its list of nominees for the 74th Emmys.

Five cast members from "Squid Game" were nominated for acting awards.

Lee Jung-jae was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Jung Ho-yeon for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Park Hae-soo and O Yeong-su for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and Lee You-mi for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

"Squid Game" will vie for the award for Outstanding Drama Series versus "Better Call Saul," "Euphoria," "Ozark," "Severance," "Stranger Things," "Succession" and "Yellowjackets."

Lee Jung-jae will contend with Jason Bateman from "Ozark," Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong from "Succession," Bob Odenkirk from "Better Call Saul" and Adam Scott from "Severance."

Park, who played Cho Sang-woo, and O, who played Oh Il-nam, are competing with each other for best supporting actor. Jung, who played Kang Sae-byeok, is nominated for best supporting actress.

"Squid Game," which was released in September last year, took the world by storm with a staggering 1.65 billion hours of viewing in just four weeks, a Netflix record.

The Emmys are the biggest awards in American broadcasting since the academy in 1949 began to honor TV programs and their accomplishments. This year's ceremony is slated for Sept. 12 and will be livestreamed on NBC.
