A record 544 domestic pharmaceutical and bio companies and organizations from June 5-8 will participate in this year's Bio International Convention in Boston.

Also called BIO USA, the event is the world's biggest biopharmaceutical exhibition and hosted by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) of the U.S.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on June 5 announced the attendance of 544 domestic companies and institutions at this year's BIO USA.

Last year's event attracted 255.

Marking its 31st anniversary, the convention this year will feature innovative technologies and outstanding products and attract an estimated 9,100 biotech companies from 85 countries including Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) and Pfizer.

Korean bio giants including Samsung Biologics, Celltrion and Lotte Biologics will each run a booth to promote themselves and win contracts.

Since 2000, the ministry at the event has run the Korean Pavilion exclusively for displays and promotions of domestic bio companies jointly with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency and Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization (Korea BIO). This year, the space will promote the products of 20 domestic bio companies like Binex and EuBiologics and host individual business consultations.

Jointly with Korea BIO and BIO, the ministry will also host on June 7 the Korea-U.S. Bio Roundtable as part of a follow-up measure to the memorandum of understanding concluded between both bio organizations during President Yoon Suk Yeol's state visit to the U.S. last month.

The roundtable will see talks on potential cooperation in building supply chains for the bio sectors of both countries by the heads of both bio organizations and major companies like Samsung Bioepis, Celltrion and SK Biopharmaceuticals of Korea and MSD and Bristol Myers Squibb of the U.S.

To continue and boost cooperation between bio companies of both countries after BIO USA, the ministry from July 12-14 will host in Seoul the convention Bioplus-Interphex Korea.
