I went to the London Book Fair to explore new emerging publishing companies, as a book editor. There I met Park Soo-hyun, a Korean writer and publisher who promotes Korean culture through her books, and publishing company in Korea called Baramgil Books. During an interview conducted on April 19, Park shared insights on her work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Park Soo-hyun. Before being a writer, I worked as a computer programmer for 18 years. But now I'm writing about books regarding Korean history and Jeju Island.

What was your journey toward becoming a writer?

After I quit my job as a programmer, I traveled around the world and realized that there were not many books about Korea and its cultural history. It was my motivation. It has been 7 years since I started running my own publishing company.

Why do you write books about Korean history?

I have been interested in history since I was young, because I liked watching historical dramas. I also think that palaces are not only a place in history, but also a place of peace when I look up at the vast sky from Honghwamun Gate in front of Changgyeonggung Palace. I hope that Korea’s history will be as well-known as our celebrity figures.

Can you introduce some of your works?

The book called “Korean Food 102” gives a detailed introduction to the Korea's culinary tradition, and showcases Korean culture with vivid images. The book “Palace” also contains the rich history of the main palaces in Korea.

Do you have anything to say to the readers?

Being a part of the London Book Fair was a great opportunity to attract a wider readership and let more people know about Korea. I thank the Korean Publishing and Culture Industry Promotion Agency for providing this opportunity. I hope to attend next time and continue to promote Korea with my books.
