Jeongjo’s Connection to Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built under King Jeongjo’s command when he moved his father Prince Sado’s tomb to Suwon. A range of architectural techniques were used in connection with the natural landforms of the area to create an extremely well-protected fortress, earning it international recognition as UNESCO World Heritage in 1997. Every year after construction was completed in October 1796, King Jeongjo would travel to Suwon to visit his father’s tomb, an image recorded in the Folding Screen of Royal Parade to Hwaseong Fortress.
