2023 World Innovation Cities Forum: First Step Towards Science and Technology-based Urban Solidarity and Innovation Strategy

On the 5th of October, Daejeon City held the 2023 World Innovation Cities Forum (2023 세계혁신도시포럼) at the Daejeon Convention Center and took the first step toward solidarity with other cities with the based on science and technology with five overseas cities, including Seattle and the USA.

This forum was continue to the 6th to solve the world's common urban problems through cooperation between cities as well as discuss sustainable urban development models.

On this day, a total of six local government delegations and city science and technology innovation experts participated, including Daejeon City, Seattle and Montgomery County (Maryland) in the United States, Calgary in Canada, Dortmund in Germany, and Malaga in Spain.

On the morning of the first day of the forum, an opening ceremony with keynote session, and topic presentation session was held. Continue to the afternoon, there was an urban policy presentation session.

The opening ceremony was held with an opening speech by Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo (이장우), a welcoming speech by Daejeon City Council Vice Chairman Kim Jin-oh (김진오), and a congratulatory speech by Montgomery County Council Chairman Evan Glass. At the opening ceremony, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo expressed his gratitude to the city delegations who participated in event, emphasizing: “Let’s find ways to achieve economic development and innovation by leveraging the strengths of the science city”.

At the keynote section, the keynote speech was given by Tjark-Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), introducing “Inter-city solidarity and open innovation strategy” and giving out an overview of solving urban problems and sustainable shared growth under the theme “Based on advanced technology”.

Following that, former mayor of Eindhoven and current chairman of the supervisory board of Eindhoven University of Technology Innovation and Startup Holding Company John Jorritsma, gave a case-based presentation on “Eindhoven’s Innovation Strategy, the Best Innovation City in Europe”, and CEO of the Seattle Economic Development Corporation Brian Surratt, sharing his thought through a presentation on the topic “Seattle, a city that is changing the world”.

In the afternoon, urban policy presentation session was held in order to let city representatives introduced cases of solving urban problems based on science and technology and innovation policies.

The forum started with Deputy Mayor of Economics and Science of Daejeon City Lee Seok-bong, Vice Mayor of Malaga (Spain) Alicia Izquierdo; CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Seattle (USA) Brian Surratt; Chief Administrative Officer of Montgomery County, Richard Madaleno; Director of Convergence, Analysis & Innovation Bureau, Calgary (Canada) Bruce Cullen and Director of the International Relations Department, Dortmund (Germany) Martin van der Pütten.

After the case presentation, honorary research fellow at the Science and Technology Policy Institute Jang Yong-suk (장용석), hosted and had a question-and-answer session with city representatives during the event.
