Park Sung-hyun (Moonjeong Primary School grade 6) and Song Chi-hoon (Dunsan Primary School grade 4) participated in the SLD104 team at the Daejeon Smart Learning Center Star Lab Academy (CEO Lee Young-sik). During the competition from the 17th to the 18th of this month, they won first place in the LEGO SUMO 1kg (up to 13 y.o.) category at the Robotex International Competition held in Tallinn, Estonia. This was also Korea’s first win ever, making it a stepping stone for Korea to be more meaningful.

This is a competition in which the main body is assembled with Lego blocks according to the established standards and then pushed through program coding. After winning the Robotex Korea domestic competition last September, they were able to participate in the world competition after two months of preparation.

Among the 90 teams from around the world, 12 top-ranked teams from each group are held in the form of a tournament + repechage format, and Korea's Star Lab teams showed the power of the Republic of Korea, with four teams 1 Daejeon Star Lab team and 3 Yongin Star Lab team.

Among them, the SLD104 team led by Daejeon Star Lab Director Lee Young-sik won an overwhelming first place as Park Sung-hyun's outstanding performance resulted in winning all the games. Park Sung-hyun, who attended the competition, expressed his will to take on a new challenge, saying, “I want to challenge the LEGO SUMO 3kg event next year". In addition to Robot Sumo, Robotex International also features various other events such as Line Following and Open Folkrace.

Recently, in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, coding education that enhances children's creativity and logic by combining robot science such as IoT and AI has been in the spotlight. We hope that it will also be in the spotlight in Korea through a world competition using LEGO education solutions. A robot that can communicate with children around the world, encourage them, and develop their invisible inner strength (emotional, cognitive, experiential) or ability to think while having fun, rather than just finding the right answer in an educational environment and producing visible results. Director Lee Young-sik of Daejeon Star Lab expressed his final thoughts by saying that he would work harder and conduct more research to improve coding education.
