Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul Meets with UNESCO Director-General

On the occasion of the Group of 20 (G20) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul met with UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay on February 22 and discussed various issues including Korea-UNESCO cooperation.

 

 

Foreign Minister Cho appreciated the close collaboration between Korea and UNESCO across various fields. Particularly, Minister Cho expressed hope for further cooperation in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI), highlighting UNESCO’s development of the “Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence,” the world’s first global standard on AI ethics. Additionally, Minister Cho noted that the Korean government is also playing a leading role in this field, including hosting the AI Safety Summit in Seoul.

Director-General Azoulay expressed gratitude for Korea's support for UNESCO's activities in education, including vocational education in Africa. She also wished for the successful hosting of the Korea-Africa Summit, and hoped to further strengthen cooperation on Africa between Korea and UNESCO.

Foreign Minister Cho and Director-General Azoulay also discussed cooperation on issues related to world heritage, as well as Korea's contributions to UNESCO's overall operations as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board.
